A cheap upgrade worth doing
If your washer still has the original black rubber fill hoses, replace them with braided stainless hoses. Old rubber hoses crack with age, and a burst fill hose can flood a laundry room in minutes. Turn the water valves off when you leave town.

The hookups behind the washer
A lot of washer trouble in older Carrollwood homes starts behind the machine, not inside it:
- Supply valves. Old multi turn faucets get stiff and often do not open fully, which makes fills slow. Make sure both are turned all the way open.
- Fill hoses. Rubber hoses older than about five years should be replaced, ideally with braided ones.
- Drain hose. It should hook into the standpipe loosely, with an air gap, not sealed or pushed down too far. A hose pushed deep into the pipe can siphon water out of the washer during the fill.
- Standpipe. A slow standpipe overflows during the drain. If water comes up out of the pipe, the house drain needs clearing.
