Hurricane season and your appliances
Plant City sits inland, but summer storms and hurricanes still knock out power for days at a time. A little preparation protects the food and the appliances:
- Before the storm: turn the refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings a day ahead, and fill empty space with bottles of water. A full freezer stays cold far longer.
- When the power goes out: keep the doors closed. Unplug ranges, microwaves and washers so they are not hit by the surge when power returns.
- When power comes back: wait a few minutes after it stabilizes, then plug appliances back in one at a time.
- Generators: run a refrigerator only on a properly sized generator through a heavy duty cord, never through a long thin extension cord.
