Report by Sam Ralin, owner and senior technician

In a Tampa townhouse, a Maytag top load washer kept dripping water into the drum even when it was switched off. Water was coming through the detergent dispenser.
The cause was the water inlet valve. Both the hot and cold sides were leaking internally and not closing fully, so water kept trickling in. On this model the valve is part of the dispenser assembly, and the complete assembly was replaced.
Why it matters
A valve that leaks a little can fail open completely, and a washer that fills while nobody is home can overflow. If your washer has water in it that you did not put there, turn off both faucets behind it until it is repaired.
