Symptoms and what usually causes them
- Several cycles to dry a load: a lint packed vent, a weak blower wheel, or a heating element that only partly works.

Lint screen every load, vent every year

Gas or electric? How to tell, and why it matters
Carrollwood has both kinds of dryers, often in the same neighborhood, and they fail in different ways. To tell which you have, look behind the dryer:
- Electric: a thick cord with a large three or four prong plug in a big round or rectangular outlet. No gas line.
- Gas: a normal household plug plus a yellow or metal gas line with a shutoff valve.
On an electric dryer, no heat usually means a thermal fuse, element or thermostat, or one half of the double breaker tripped. On a gas dryer it is usually the igniter, the flame sensor or the gas valve coils. Gas dryers also need the gas valve behind them fully open, which is easy to bump when the dryer is pushed back.
Never try to repair the gas parts yourself. If you smell gas near the dryer, turn the valve off, open a window, and call your gas company before calling us.
