Check the freezer floor
Every defrost cycle melts frost off the evaporator, and that water is supposed to run down a drain to a pan under the refrigerator, where it evaporates. When the drain freezes or clogs, the water spreads across the freezer floor and refreezes. You may notice:
- A smooth layer of ice under the bottom freezer basket
- Water dripping into the fresh food section
- An ice maker that slows down and then stops
Chipping the ice away buys a few days. The fix is clearing the drain and finding why it froze, often a weak drain heater or a defrost part.
Ice maker not making ice
- Make sure the ice maker is switched on and the arm or sensor is not stuck in the off position.
- Check the freezer temperature. Ice makers need roughly 0 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit to cycle.
- If the water filter was changed recently, make sure it is the right one and fully locked in.
