- Area
- Lithia
- Unit
- Samsung refrigerator, RS267TDPN
- Symptom
- Water leaking from under the refrigerator
- Found
- The freezer evaporator fan had failed, the coil was iced over and the defrost drain line was frozen, so meltwater overflowed
- Outcome
- Replaced the evaporator fan, defrosted and cleared the drain, removed the ice and cleaned the condenser coil
Report by Sam Ralin, owner and senior technician

A Samsung RS267TDPN side by side in a Lithia rental was leaking water onto the floor.
The leak started in the freezer. The evaporator fan had failed, the coil iced over, and the defrost drain line froze solid. When the defrost cycle ran, the meltwater had nowhere to go, built up as ice in the bottom of the freezer and leaked out underneath. The technician replaced the evaporator fan, defrosted the coil, cleared and cleaned the drain line, removed the ice from the compartment and cleaned the condenser coil at the back.
Water under a refrigerator: the usual suspects
- A frozen or clogged defrost drain
- A cracked water line or a loose filter
- A drain pan that is out of place
Ice on the freezer floor is a strong sign it is the drain.
