Report by Sam Ralin, owner and senior technician

A Frigidaire FRSS2623ASB side by side in a Lithia rental made a constant grinding sound. The tenant thought it was coming from the dispenser.
The technician traced the grinding to a fan motor that was failing as it ran, not to the dispenser or the ice maker. He replaced the fan motor.
Where refrigerator noises come from
- Grinding or squealing that stops when you open the freezer door: the evaporator fan.
- Noise from the bottom back: the condenser fan, often with dust or debris in it.
- Grinding only when you press the ice lever: the dispenser auger motor.
A noisy fan can stop completely, and then the refrigerator warms up, so it is worth fixing early.
