Slow igniter, cool oven
On a gas oven the igniter glows to heat up, and the gas valve only opens once the igniter draws enough current. An aging igniter still glows but takes longer each time, so the oven heats slowly and falls behind. Signs:
- A long wait, more than a minute or two, before you hear the burner light.
- A faint smell of gas at the start of baking.
- Preheat taking much longer than it used to.
If you smell gas for more than a few seconds, turn the oven off and open a window.
