Report by Sam Ralin, owner and senior technician

A Hoshizaki ice machine in St. Petersburg stopped making ice. On a cube ice machine, the circulation pump sends water over the evaporator plate where the cubes form. Without it, the machine cycles but no ice builds up.
The technician found the circulation pump not working and replaced it with Hoshizaki's pump and motor kit. He also recommended a thorough descaling and new water filters, because scale and an old filter shorten the life of the new pump.
Signs your ice machine pump is failing
- Thin, cloudy or incomplete cubes before production stops
- A humming or grinding sound from the lower section
- Water not flowing over the evaporator during a freeze cycle
