Report by Sam Ralin, owner and senior technician

The kitchen at an assisted living facility in Riverview called because its commercial ice machine kept shutting down, coming back after a minute and shutting down again.
The technician traced the shutdowns to the harvest float switch, which tells the board when the water level is right to start a harvest.
The switch was faulty and was replaced. He also noted two things for the kitchen to watch: the second float switch, which controls ice thickness, may need attention later, and there is a small leak from the water trough at the dump valve that can get worse over time.
For kitchens that depend on ice
- Write down when the machine stops. A pattern helps diagnosis.
- Keep the area under the machine dry so leaks are easy to spot.
- Descale and sanitize on a schedule, at least twice a year.
Commercial service calls are $125, credited toward the repair.
