Report by Sam Ralin, owner and senior technician

A GE PTD70EBST0WS dryer near Westshore would not run. The customer had noticed screws coming out near the middle of the dryer.
The technician took the dryer completely apart to reach the drum mount. Two bolts on the inside of the drum had backed out, and the drum had slipped off its support shaft. No parts were broken. He set the drum back on the shaft, reinstalled and tightened both bolts, and reassembled the dryer. The drum turned properly again.
Why this happens
Overloading and heavy items like boots or rugs put a lot of force on the drum mount. If your dryer starts to thump or the drum sits crooked, stop using it. Running it that way can damage the shaft or the rear bearing, and then a simple fix becomes a part replacement.
