A burning smell is a warning
In June 2026, just north in Riverview, a dryer gave off a burnt smell every time it started. The vent duct was clogged, the dryer had been overheating, and two safety parts had already failed: the thermal fuse and the high limit thermostat. The technician cleaned the duct and replaced both parts.
Those safety parts are there to stop a fire. When they fail from overheating, replacing them without clearing the vent only resets the clock. That is why we look at the vent on every dryer call.
Check the outside vent hood
- Run the dryer on high heat and go outside to the vent hood.
- You should feel a strong, warm flow of air and see the flap open fully.
- Look for lint packed around the opening, a stuck flap, or a screen or mesh over the hood. Screens catch lint and block the vent, so they should not be used on dryer vents.
- Look for bird or wasp nests, which are common in vent hoods in this area.
A weak, cool puff of air means the vent needs cleaning before the dryer is the problem.
