How a gas oven lights
A gas oven has no pilot light. When you set it to bake, a glow bar igniter heats up until it is bright orange. Only when it draws enough current does the gas valve open, and the gas lights off the glowing igniter. Ovens with a separate broil burner have a second igniter at the top. That is why one mode can work while the other does not.
Is it the igniter?
- Set the oven to bake and look through the slots in the bottom panel after 30 seconds.
- If the igniter glows but there is no flame after two minutes, the igniter is likely too weak.
- If it does not glow at all, the igniter or the control may have failed.
- If you smell gas without a flame, turn the oven off and open a window.
