Keep a glass or induction top healthy
Use flat bottomed pans that sit fully on the zone, lift them instead of sliding them, and clean with a cooktop cleaner rather than anything abrasive. On induction, a magnet that sticks firmly to the bottom of the pan means the pan will work.

Gas cooktops: reading the flame
A healthy gas burner tells you a lot just by how it looks:
- Blue, steady flame, even all the way around: normal.
- Yellow or orange tips: often dust, cleaner residue or a burner cap that is off center. Clean and reseat the cap. If it stays yellow, the burner needs adjusting, because yellow flames can produce soot.
- Uneven flame with gaps: clogged burner ports.
- Flame lifts off the burner or roars: too much air or a pressure problem. Turn it off and call.
- Clicking that continues after lighting: moisture under the cap or a switch that sticks.
Any time you smell gas with the burners off, turn off the stove, open windows and call your gas company first.
