Report by Sam Ralin, owner and senior technician

A GE JD630DF6WW electric range in Spring Hill had two burners that overheated and would not turn down. On the front right burner the outer ring heated but the center element stayed cold.
The technician tested each part. The far left and far right burner control switches, the infinite switches that cycle power to keep a burner at the setting you choose, had both failed. The front right dual radiant element had also lost its inner coil. He replaced both switches and the complete front right element, and the burners heated and cycled normally again.
Burner always on high?
A burner that glows red at every setting usually means a failed infinite switch. It is also a fire risk, so switch that burner off at the knob and do not use it until it is repaired. For more on this repair, see our guide to a glass top burner that will not turn off.
