Report by Sam Ralin, owner and senior technician

At a managed rental in Seminole, a microwave made an electrical cracking noise when it was started, then sparked, smoked and gave off a strong burning smell.
The technician found the magnetron broken. The magnetron is the part that makes the microwaves that heat the food. A failing one can arc and smoke. The magnetron kit was replaced.
If your microwave sparks
- Stop it right away and unplug it, or switch off its breaker if it is built in.
- Check for metal inside: a twist tie, foil or a dish with a metal rim. That is the most common cause of sparks.
- If there was no metal, do not use it again until it is checked.
