Report by Sam Ralin, owner and senior technician

A tenant in Lithia reported that the microwave's display had gone dark, even though it still heated food. On top of that, every time the door opened, the upper trim cover came loose.
The technician found a short circuit had failed the control board, which is why the display stopped working. The trim problem was separate: the upper plastic panel had become brittle from years of heat rising from the range below. Both the control board and the trim panel were replaced.
Over the range microwaves age faster
An over the range microwave sits in the heat and steam from the cooktop. Use the vent fan whenever you cook on the front burners, and keep the grease filters clean. It protects the plastic and the electronics.
